First Time Go Abroad!

Indonesian squad from UI, ITS and Trisakti University

This story is intended for you who are still in college. I have a dream to go abroad when I freshman in 2013.

I realized that I don’t have any capability to join any overseas program, even I don’t know at all about whether there is a program that can make me go abroad.

On the other hand my parents’ financial was being critical. At that time I thought I was just focusing on college, looking for scholarships and looking for additional income as private teacher that’s all.

Nothing can stop me, time after time I feel that I have to spent my time productively. I was join volunteer, Petrolida (the biggest event by Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) ITS) , Chemical Engineering English Club and Chernival (the biggest event by Chemical Engineering Student Association ITS).

Faris (left side) my companion from ITS in this conference.

All of these things I did along with the academic matters and also part time as private teacher. It  looks like impossible, even now I do not believe I can do that in the past.

I perform very well in all of those things. Until I was appointed to lead as project officer of Petrolida (Petroleum Integrated Days by SPE ITS) in my 2nd year!

I learned a lot a year before when I was on the committee. I fix the basic things that can make a big change in the future.

I got a chance to learn how to make an international event by joining Asia Pasific SPE Student Chapter Conference in Puerto Princesa, Phillipines!

Good news has arisen because I will attend the international conference in Phillipines, but the bad news is who can support for airfare ticket? While all of the transport and accomodation including meals already provide by host university.

I have to get at least IDR 6 million for flight ticket and allowance during the event. I try to push my brain harder to get that much money because there is no option to ask my parents.
Even I maximize my part time job as private teacher will not suffice because of very short time only about 3 months.

I also consulted with my friends, seniors, lecturers who are experienced in searching for grant.

After that, the advice I can do is to make a grant proposal for submission to the ITS and also my department.

The process is very complicated, it takes a very long time and very tiring to propose the grant proposal. I also spend my summer holiday about 2 months to speed up the approval process and follow up related to this proposal.

This process was exhausting and even I had planned to cancel my departure in this event.
I always do it with sincerity because I believe that the results will certainly not betray the effort.

Malaysian guys and girls

Finally after more than 2 months I manage this proposal, I got full funding support for plane tickets and allowance for this conference!

So, departure time had just arrived, delegate from ITS is me and my friend, Muhammad Rosihan Faris. Both of us are part of Petrolida team.

When we arrived there we did not expect to meet many friends from Indonesia ie Timothy Stephan Darsana from Trisakti University, Adyota Prabhaswara, Alexander Stefan, Iman Mihardja, Klanita Sabira and Nidya Bestari from Universitas Indonesia.

The participants are mostly from Phillipines (Palawan State University and Batangas State University) also there are from Vietnam and Malaysia.

I get something very valuable to me, from international exposure, networking, different point of view, and the most important is I became really understand of how the standard of making an international event.

Bonding between fellow participants did not stop just then, I had a lot of visits among fellow participants and the remarkable is the friendship of fellow participants from Indonesia until we are graduate.

Palawan Gangster!

Hopefully my experience can inspire you all, Don’t make financial issue to make your step limited.

Keep focus on your goals and you should dare to get out of your comfort zone. Good luck!
